Ten + one uplifting songs to make you feel better about almost everything

So Dutch summer weather is getting you down huh? Still so many days till your well-deserved vacation? Those great looking high heels you got from Zalando are killing your feet, your boss is an ass and you just can’t take it any longer? Here are 10 great songs (plus 1) that will change your mood in no-time. Because life’s too short for uncomfortable shoes and music will heal us all.

There goes, in random order:

1. Weezer – Island in the sun

California. Sun. Relaxation. The pleasantly nerdy members of Weezer are playing around with monkeys and baby lions. The ultimate vacation song.

2. Serge Gainsbourg – La Javanaise

Back in the last century  I had this French upstairs neighbor who introduced me to all good things French, including poet/rebel/singer/dirty old man Gainsbourg (yes, Je t’ aime moi non plus Gainsbourg). Oh la la!

3. PJ Harvey – Rid of Me

Girl power avant la lettre. This high-heeled and couturier-skirted young lady (at the time) has Alanis Morissette for breakfast, with Anouk sprinkles on top.

4. Hautekiet & De Leeuw – Het leven is nog nooit zo mooi geweest

Screaming out loud about how happy you are, so you cannot feel the pain. If you’re doing it for long enough, it even actually works.

5. Biffy Clyro – Many of Horror

“It’s probably not going to work out between the two of us, but let’s just give it a shot and see what happens”. Starts off quietly, only to end with fists up in the air and adrenaline pouring out of your ears.

6. Sepultura – Arise

Brazilian speed metal. Smooth, tight and fast and before you know you have done the dishes and took out the trash. Or the other way around.

7. Blur – Song 2

FIFA96. Oasis’ scruffy nephews,  bigger than Britpop ever has been.

8. Pet Shop Boys – Happiness

If it didn’t already exist, the Pet Shop Boys would invent irony. Over 30 years of smart lyrics, synchronized hand gestures, blow-up jackets, fur coats and more of the most outrageous outfits you can imagine.

9. Armin van Buuren – doesn’t really matter what song

Because sometimes it just feels so good to pound on mindlessly. In whatever way.

10. De Kraaien – Broekie

Haags (which is the variety of Dutch they speak in Den Haag) is happy and the classic “Oh oh Den Haag” is getting a bit old. Enter De Kraaien. Also very dance-able for 3- to 6-year-olds.

The last one isn’t to be found on Spotify and therefore not in the playlist. Go check it out anyway, if only because it’s the most beautiful song ever made in Dutch:

+1 Maarten van Roozendaal – Mooi

The ultimate spring song. Decay and the birth of new life. Life is good, every new spring is a gift. Enjoy it to the fullest, because before you know everything is over.
