It is that time of the year when Haarlem turns into one huge music concert in celebration of freedom.
Bevrijdingspop! (Liberation Pop Festival)
On Thursday 5th May, Haarlem hosts the oldest and biggest liberation pop festival in The Netherlands, with several music stages in and around Haarlemmerhout. There is also a special children’s festival with fun activities. The music starts from 12:00 on the various stages.
What is the Liberation Pop Festival?
“On May 5th we celebrate that we live in freedom in the Netherlands. We celebrate that we are liberated in 1945 by the German occupation in Europe and the Japanese occupation in Asia. That there is an end to the Second World War, filled with violence and oppression. May 5th is also a day to reflect on the importance of freedom and to realize that freedom is fragile. For Freedom in the Netherlands have fought many and even their lives.
On the Liberation Festivals we stand together dwell on it during different times and activities. To celebrate we are free, and to show support to those who are not.” [Quote by Bevrijdingspop]
The day before, is National commemoration of the dead.
On Wednesday 4th May, the Netherlands commemorates its war dead. The commemoration takes place at several locations in Haarlem.
The official national commemoration service and two-minute silence at the war memorial in Dreef are followed by a Commemoration Concert, starting at 20:30 in Haarlemmerhout.
