Language as bridge or barrier?

If you don’t speak one another’s language, it’s quite simple: you just don’t understand one another. End of. But if you have some knowledge of the other language, that’s when things really start to get difficult. LANGUAGE focuses (logically enough) on ‘language’. How can words, grammar and our thought patterns determine our vision of the world? Why is it impossible to ever ‘really’ translate something? And can we separate language from emotion and experience?

Love of language

Vanja Rukavina and his parents fled the civil war in Sarajevo in 1992, ending up in the Netherlands. His life experiences, love of language (and of his Korean girlfriend) make up the ingredients for his solo production LANGUAGE. Vanja has previously performed in the marathon production The Nation by Het Nationale Theater, winning an Arlecchino award for best supporting male actor in the process. Vanja is also a regular at the Internationaal Theater Amsterdam. He has performed in various films and series, including Flikken Maastricht, Overspel and Ik weet wie je bent.
