Winter may not yet be over, though we can see signs that the change of season is just around the corner. Spring bulbs are sprouting through the soil and daffodils are already for sale at the flower stalls, and we can definitely see the days getting longer. Perhaps, just perhaps, this means our hibernation mode is officially over and we can get out and about again! In which case you might be asking, what’s in the calendar for February? Let’s start with getting these events pencilled in your diary for this month!
Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 February
Haarlem is known as H-town for many reasons, one of which could be the weekend that Haarlem is at its happiest – when it’s time for the Geluksroute! This annual event allows for inspiring encounters and serendipitous discoveries. The premise is simple: let’s spread some happiness by sharing what makes you happy. Explore the city streets to find hidden gems, street performances, unexpected encounters and bucket loads of smiles.
Sunday 9 February
Gluren bij de Buren
Get to know your neighbours by taking the unique invitation to step into their homes and grab the chance to watch artists, masters and musicians perform for your delight during the event that is known as Gluren bij de Buren. Popping up all across the Netherlands, this event literally politely asks you to ‘peek at your neighbours’ while they perform in their living rooms.
Friday 14 February
Haarlem Valentine Comedy (English spoken)
The monthly event run by the Haarlem Comedy Factory brings you a heart-shaped show for this Stand-Up Comedy Special on Valentine’s Day itself at DeDAKKAS. There will be lots of laughs and, yes, perhaps even a few tears thanks to the stellar line-up of comedians, including Michael Jäger and Mikaela Burch. It promises to be a fun-filled night! So before the tickets sell out, make sure you don’t miss it and buy your tickets online here. The ticket price is €12.50 per person. Remaining tickets (if available) can be bought at the door for €15 p.p.
Wednesday 19 February
Dutch Language Café
Already in this news post we have tested your Dutch, with geluk (happiness) and gluren (to peek); admittedly, I didn’t know what the latter meant, so perhaps this event will also be for me: it’s the February Dutch Language Café. Come along to this free event and get the opportunity to practice your Dutch in a friendly and relaxing environment. It’s informal and all level of Dutch speakers are welcome; all attendees join in to help each other out. Even if you have the tiniest level of knowledge of the Dutch language, you are bound to find it worthwhile and, importantly, fun! Start time is 19:30 at Hello I’m Local. Note that entrance is free but you need to register for the event so our host Nick knows that you will attend.
