Toneelschuur

Are you a theatre enthusiast, a film freak, or interested in one of the architectural landmarks of the city of Haarlem? Or are you simply looking for a nice place to enjoy a cup of fresh made coffee in the city centre? Then the Toneelschuur is the place to be for you. Check out the Language no problem Theatre Program for plays, theatrical and dance performances that can be attended by non-Dutch speaking visitors and the list of movies in original language.

Building

For almost 50 years, this performing arts stage, film house and theatre production company has played a crucial role in the cultural development of Haarlem. The modern building the organisation is housed in today, was designed by cartoonist Joost Swarte, who turned it into more than just a venue. The Toneelschuur is an artwork in itself and everybody is more than welcome to have a look around.

Programme

Besides the building, the program consists of a broad variety of films, theatre, dance and musical theatre performances for adults, youngsters and children. The films that are presented find their origin all over the world and are almost always (children’s movies excluded) subtitled in Dutch. The spoken language of each film is shown on our website, as well as in the printed weekly program. The printed program is in Dutch, available on Tuesdays for the play week to come (Thursdays till Wednesdays). It can be taken from the venue, or is to be found at the libraries in Haarlem and some restaurants.

Cracking the Frame

Every month we show special documentaries about people that have made their mark in the world of art, literature or cinema. This series is called Cracking the Frame. These documentaries are shown mostly in English, or with English subtitles. Often they are accompanied by an introduction (mostly in Dutch).

Language no problem Theater Programme

Most theatre performances are Dutch spoken, but the modern dance performances, as well as some of the musical theatre performances do not have a language barrier. To filter out these performances, look for the ‘language no problem’ label on the website.

Check also the Language No Problem Theater Program 2019-2019. Here you can find an overview of all the plays, theatrical performances and dance performances that can be attended to by non-dutch speaking visitors. ExpatsHaarlem members get discount and organize a Meetup to go to the performances Poly-interpretability and Innenschau. Find more information here.

Films in their original language

Most of the films are shown in their original language, and subtitled in Dutch. The spoken language of the films shown in our venue can be found in the details section on each film page.

Expat Cinema

Every two weeks, the Schuur in collaboration with expatsHaarlem, presents a special screening with English subtitles. Check which films are projected next here.
